Chapter Thirty-One

Running over the snow, Eva led Mir to the back of the facility. The bitter wind blew through Eva’s thin shirt; she had her coat wrapped around the baby boys in her arms. She knew Mir, although used to lower temperatures, was even colder than she was; he didn’t even have a shirt. “We’re almost there,” she called over her shoulder.

“Good,” said Mir. His voice sounded faint.

Eva knew that most of the guards were busy ‘exterminating’ inside, and the only silver lining was that they would not all be out looking for her and Mir. Her car was parked outside; it wasn’t far now…

She fumbled for her keys with numb fingers. A faint tremor shook the ground and she froze, looking in all directions before realizing with a sickening lump in her stomach that they were still destroying evidence.

People.

She unlocked the car and yanked the door open, shouting “Get in.” She tucked the wailing babies in the back and added “Could you sit in the back and be with the children?”

She turned and noticed Mir’s face was pale, as he stared at the car. “It’s fine,” she assured him, trying to keep the panic from her voice. “Please, Mir, just get in. I drive these all the time. They’re perfectly safe.”

She waited until he pulled the door open and then turned the keys in the ignition, switching the heater on as high as it would go. She gunned the engine and plowed the car backwards, spun it to the right, and pushed down on the accelerator.

Eva’s mind spun as fast as the tires below her. Was Dr. Ross dead? Fyodor must be, or he would have followed them. She felt an unexpected urge to scream and mourn for Fyodor – she had despised him until half an hour ago.

She had judged him too quickly.

Eva replayed the scene at the exit door in her mind. She could see every line on Dr. Ross’s cruel face, the determined way Igorov held himself, the way Mir curled protectively around the tiny girl in his arms, the gunshot…

“Mir?” She looked into the rear-view mirror.

Mir’s skin was the color of ash. He stared ahead as if he were frozen in position, his lips slightly parted as he sucked in difficult breaths. “Eva…”

“Mir, what is it?” Eva’s voice was hard with panic. She had never seen the stray bullet hit anything. Flying down the desolate stretch of barely-paved road, she twisted in her seat to look at him. His left arm was braced protectively over the three infants wrapped in Eva’s coat. Black blood ran from a hole on his upper arm, surrounded by a mass of rapidly spreading bruises.

“Mir, you need to stop the bleeding,” she instructed, trying to stay calm. She looked back at the road and took a deep breath. “You need to press something against it.”

“I can’t,” he rasped, pressing himself against the back of the seat.

“What do you mean, you can’t?” she cried, veering sharply to avoid a stretch of ice.
